The Lorentz Center is opening a second facility - Call for proposals

The Lorentz Center expands its activities with a new, smaller facility dedicated to workshops for up to 25 participants: the Lorentz Center@Snellius. Activities in the new facility will begin in July 2012. Proposals for all Lorentz Center workshops may be submitted with the first coming submission deadline: 15 May 2012.

Construction has begun for the expansion of the Lorentz Center. Starting summer 2012, the Lorentz Center will thus run activities in parallel at two venues: the current Lorentz Center@Oort facility and the new Lorentz Center@Snellius facility, located across the street from each other in Leiden. The new activities are also an expansion of the Lorentz Center format as the Lorentz Center@Snellius is designed for workshops with up to 25 participants instead of 55 participants at the Lorentz Center@Oort.

Focusing on Science
Lorentz center

The Lorentz Center facilitates and funds international workshops in the sciences that take place at its two venues in Leiden. Lorentz Center workshops are known as an, often rare, occasion to spend time focusing on the science. The 5‐day Lorentz Center workshop format, with ample time for discussions and collaboration, has proven to be especially suited for organizing interdisciplinary endeavors, including those at the intersection of the sciences with the humanities, the social sciences and/or technology.

Schools and consortium meetings

The new facility, Lorentz Center@Snellius, is dedicated to small and focused meetings, for example devoted to one well‐defined research issue or to brainstorm sessions over new research areas.  Participants can actively work together on shared large data sets or team up on writing a review paper, editing a book, etc. The intimate setting of the Lorentz Center@Snellius is designed to intensify collaboration and stimulate the open exchange of ideas. With this second facility, the Lorentz Center will also be open again to activities as schools and consortium meetings.

Invitation to propose ideas for meetings

We invite the scientific community to propose ideas for meetings in the new, more focused Lorentz Center@Snellius format, as well as the well‐known Lorentz Center@Oort format. Proposals for Lorentz Center workshops are welcomed from any scientist ‐ from any country. The first submission deadline is 15 May 2012, for activities taking place before September 2013.

Opening Lorentz Center@Snellius

Workshops receive organizational as well as financial support from the Lorentz Center. The Lorentz Center is supported by Leiden University and by the Dutch science foundations NWO and FOM. The expansion is financed by a grant from the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science (OCW). The official opening of the Lorentz Center@Snellius will be on 4 October 2012.
