Honours course ‘Crises in Biology – Geology & Marine Biology’
The Honours course ‘Crises in Biology – Geology & Marine Biology’ starts with an introduction in the Netherlands in June. You will experience biological crises in the course of geological history and ends with a two-week summer school in Normandy on the 'Tree of Life'.
-
This Honours course for excellent students is a collaboration of the Universities of Leiden, Utrecht and Amsterdam (UU and VU). It provides both broadening and deepening; extra challenging education.
- Introduction
Courses ‘The origin of life’
A group of researchers from these three universities, the University of Amsterdam and NCB Naturalis discuss the origin of life, the “Cambrian Explosion”: the rapid increase in biodiversity at the beginning of the Paleozoic and adaptation to life on the land of the arthropods.Summer school in Normandy
In August a summer school of two weeks starts. In the first week we look at the biodiversity of life in the marine environment along the coast of Normandy, under the guidance of a group of marine biologists. We meet with almost the complete ‘Tree of Life’. The group will be based in the new marine laboratory of the Centre Régional d’Etudes Côtières, of the University of Caen in Luc-sur-Mer.In the second week we search for evidence of life in geological history. Normandy is the perfect location because there are sedimentary rocks from the history of the late Precambrian to the Tertiary: with fossils of bacterial colonies: stromatolites, trilobites in the Paleozoic Calimene shales, and of large oysters, gryphea in the clay of Oxford and ammonites and brachiopods in the various limestone formations.
The challenge will be to explain the important issues from a biological and geological perspective, from the perspective of different disciplines.
- For whom?
Second and third year students of the Leiden Honours College and the Leiden University College.
Undergraduate honours programme students of Earth Sciences courses at the VU and UU universities and students from the TU Delft of our Leiden-Delft joint degree programmes are also welcome!
- Who is involved?
Specialists from the University of Leiden, NCB-Naturalis, VU University, Utrecht University and the University of Amsterdam each will teach sessions in their fields of expertise.
