May 2012 – Prof. Timothy Birkhead visited Leiden for the 2012 Niko Tinbergen lecture
Prof. Timothy Birkhead from the Department of Animal and Plant Sciences at the University of Sheffield, England visited Leiden and the IBL for the 2012 Niko Tinbergen lecture. During his lecture he spoke about the study of animal behaviour addressing paradigms and progress with historical perspectives, examples from his own work on mate choice and sexual selection in birds, and some viewpoints about the future.

The Niko Tinbergen lecture on Evolution is organized yearly in honour of the Dutch Nobel-prize winning ethologist Niko Tinbergen by the Leiden University in collaboration with the national newspaper NRC Handelsblad, the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research NWO, the Natural History museum of Naturalis, the Dutch National Museum for the History of Science and Medicine Museum Boerhaave, and the International Publishing Company Brill.
This years lecture on Friday the 11th of May by Tim Birkhead was preceded by a lecture from Prof. Jelle Reumer, Director of the Natural History Museum Rotterdam who spoke about “What if anything is a bird?”
