SBB Master Specialisation: A Research Programme

The Science Based Business Programme is a Research MSc Programme that provides you with an Introduction to Business as an add-on.
You acquire in-depth knowledge and after having completed the programme, you are fully qualified to enroll in a PhD programme at the Faculty of Science.

The Research Training enables you to (further) develop your analytical and problem solving skills. Even though you are part of a research team, you train your ability to work independently, since it is your responsibility to set up and execute your research. The same holds true for the writing of your Master Thesis.
This requires that you are sufficiently prepared to do independent research on a subject that fits within one of the research groups at the Faculty of Science.

The SBB Specialisation helps you to enhance your understanding of business issues in general and can be useful in developing a career outside of (fundamental) science, be it after graduation, after having acquired a PhD or even later, as a researcher.
The programme includes an internship in a (preferably) science-oriented company, a government department or a non-profit organisation.
Arranging an internship might be relatively difficult (but certainly not impossible) for international students who do not master the Dutch language.
It is possible to do the internship outside of the Netherlands, on the condition that we can sufficiently verify the quality of the internship, the supervision and the organisation providing the internship opportunity. Finding an internship opportunity is primarily the student’s responsibility. Of course we will help where we can and may be able to provide an alternative opportunity in the business oriented domain of science research at Leiden University.

Are You Applicable?

To find out whether you can apply for the SBB Programme, have a look at the research of the Faculty of Science at Leiden University and think about which area you might want to do research in or specific topics in those areas you would like to work on.

Formally, a Bachelor in Science (or equivalent) is required. Ask the staff of the Institution where you acquired your Bachelor’s or Master’s degree, whether they regard your previous training as sufficient for doing research on a Master’s level in the Netherlands. You never know, they may have contact with researchers in the Netherlands or even at Leiden University!

Send us an .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)  and attach your CV and any additional information on your previous University and High School education that may help us assess whether entering the Research MSc Programme and Science Based Business would be a good choice.

As soon a possible we will review the information you provided and give you an advice on proceeding with a formal application for entering the programme.
