Course Content

The course SBB Fundamentals has been set up based upon what alumni and managers of science-based organizations perceive to be most important to science students pursuing a career outside science.
It gives a proper introduction to business principles and managerial skills with a focus on their application in science-based organizations.

The course programme starts with a week of introductory lectures and a business game followed by the following subjects:

1) Strategic Marketing Management
This course demonstrates the application of the ‘four Ps’ within a business strategic approach and it explains the basic marketing concepts that support decision makers in doing business effectively, i.e. consistent with the corporate and business strategy.

The course will familiarise you with the fundamental terminology used in the field of strategic marketing planning.

In addition, it aims to equip you with some of the analytical and practical skills that are necessary to contribute to your future firm’s decision-making from day one.

2) Financial Management
This course consists of four cornerstones that contribute to the financial processes within firms, namely, management accounting, financial accounting (external reporting), finance and management control.

Management accounting concerns the measuring and reporting of accounting information for the managers of a business.

Financial reporting, on the other hand, concerns the measuring and reporting of financial information for external users. Finance is an integral part of financial management because it has to do with the raising, investment and management of funds.

Management control, as the name suggests, is the function that makes sure the actual work is done to fulfil the original intention.

3) Project Management
Participants will be familiarised with a project-management method that was developed by Twynstra & Gudde Consultancy.

Three basic concepts underlie this method, i.e. phasing, decision making and control.

Students will learn to work with these concepts through a methodical approach which involves project demarcation, problem analysis, translating vague objectives into concrete results, reporting and (backwards) planning.

Through a team assignment in which they are required to write a project-plan they will experience that the project-mangement tools and concepts will help them to tackle problems, even if the content of these problems lies outside their area of expertise.

Many graduates will be assigned to project-teams especially in the early stages of their career. This course will enable them to hit the ground running and directly participate in a constructive and efficient way.

4) Innovation Management
