Corporate finance at Crucell
Mathijs van Vliet on his internship at Crucell N.V., August 2009
“Crucell N.V. is a biopharmaceutical company, with a focus on developing products that combat infectious diseases. The Crucell group is the largest independent vaccine company in the world (in 2008 over 100 Million vaccine doses were sold). Crucell completely develops, produces and markets new drugs in-house. Current vaccines battle diseases such as: Hepatitis A & B, the measles, typhoid, cholera, influenza, and Haemophilus influenzae type b. All treatments are based on the patented core technology PER.C6®, an immortalized human retina cell, capable of replicating indefinitely under serum-free conditions.
Crucell N.V. is an international public organization and is listed on the Euronext, NASDAQ (CRXL) and SWX Swiss Exchange (CRX). The corporate Headquarters is based on the Leiden Bioscience Park, Crucell has subsidiaries in Switzerland, Spain, Sweden, Italy, Korea and the United States; currently Crucell employs around 1120 people.
2008 was a good year for Crucell with first ever full year profitability, a net profit of 14.6 million EUR. With total revenues of 283.3 million EUR compared to 213.1 million EUR in 2007, an increase of 33%.
I started my internship in the beginning of 2009 in the Corporate Finance department, my main tasks where within Corporate Treasury. I chose Crucell because I wanted to further my knowledge in financial management and the initial meetings showed a good working atmosphere both in the company and Corporate Finance department. My main task was the Monthly Currency Reporting; I produced an overview of the last months currency results (e.g. foreign currency risk, derivative movements, deposits and liquidity status).
My secondary tasks were to answer ad hoc questions raised within the corporate finance team, I for instance: worked on the annual report 2008, produced several templates to be used in internal reporting and updated the Crucell Treasury Policies and Policy Database.I would truly recommend a similar internship with Crucell too other students. If you liked Financial Management, like working with numbers, do not mind if there is no direct link with your research background and are interested in working in an international oriented biotechnology company: Crucell’s Corporate Finance department is the place to be. I was able to learn a great deal, and the atmosphere is very good: friendly co-workers, good offices and positioned in Leiden on the Bioscience Park.”
